The prevailing mood in Wales’ press conferences last year was often dark with the team on a record run of 12 straight Test losses. Warren Gatland, his fellow coaches, and the Welsh players spent 2024 facing tough questions about an awful losing sequence and the country’s fall from rugby grace.
Gatland has been left frustrated by the cycle of negativity. It is understandable, though, why there has been scant cause for cheer. But on Monday, one man flipped that narrative. In just 18 minutes, Adam Jones enlivened the mood around the game in Wales.
‘Everyone alright?’ Jones asked, entering his first media briefing since it was confirmed last week he would be joining Wales as a scrum consultant on loan from Harlequins for the Six Nations. Jones, with his beaming smile and frizzy hair, is a Welsh legend and a larger-than-life personality. While he can’t turn Wales around singlehandedly, he is a canny acquisition.
It is amazing what a fresh face can do and Jones was full of positivity. He cracked jokes. He pointed out that he felt old given he once played with Wales lock Dafydd Jenkins’ dad. Adam Jones (left) is back working with Warren Gatland (right) for the first time in 11 years.
There was plenty of doom and gloom in Wales rugby in 2024 so Jones is a breath of fresh air. Jones won three Grand Slams. Here, he celebrates the 2013 triumph with Gethin Jenkins. Jones held the room. ‘We have kissed and made up,’ the former prop said of his relationship with Gatland.
