Wayne Rooney will be back in football very quickly if he wants to be after being dismissed as Plymouth manager, with broadcasters keen to sign him up as a pundit. The 39-year-old left his role as Pilgrims boss on New Year’s Eve after just 25 games in charge, which yielded five wins.

Plymouth sit bottom of the Championship heading into 2025, four points adrift from safety, and the club chose to make a change in the dugout as a result. The role was Rooney’s fourth as a manager after Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, and is another job he leaves without achieving any real success to speak of.

Whether the Manchester United and England legend has a future as a manager is yet to be seen, but he does have a career in the media ahead of him if he wants to follow that path. The Sun report that Rooney is very well thought of in television circles for his punditry work and he will have offers to make much more regular appearances.

Sky are reportedly interested in offering him a long-term deal having appeared on their channels before, while he has also popped up on ITV and BBC in the past. He is not the only Rooney who will be considering TV offers, though, with wife Coleen also reportedly in demand after her stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

The Sun reports that in the immediate aftermath of Wayne leaving Plymouth he will return to the family home and focus on the couple’s four children while his wife looks into her next move. Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier this month, Coleen said: ‘I’m looking forward to Christmas and then in January I will sit down with my team and see what I’m going to do going forward.’.
