Wrexham star James McClean is undergoing medical checks after being involved in a car crash. The former Republic of Ireland international is understood to have been driving to training in his Audi RS6 just before 9am this morning when the incident occurred close to Wrexham Golf Club.

Eyewitnesses said the 35-year-old's vehicle appeared to be written off in the collision, which has occurred a day before the Welsh side are due to take on Birmingham City in a crucial promotion clash in League One. One supporter posting on social media said: "Written his car off and holding a bleeding arm. Doesn't look good. He was walking around his black Audi. Smashed up. Loads of cops.".

Pictures shared on social media in the aftermath of the crash showed a badly damaged black Audi being taken away by a recovery vehicle. Police and fire crews attended but no serious injuries were reported and no other vehicles were reported to be involved.

Wrexham have confirmed the incident in a statement. A club spokesperson said: "Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training. "It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene.

"The player reported to the club this morning and will undergo further medical checks as a precaution.". A North Wales Police spokesperson added: "Shortly before 9am this morning (Wednesday, January 22), we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A534 in Wrexham, near to Wrexham Golf Club.
