Historic retailer WH Smith has confirmed that it has put its 500 UK high street stores up for sale to focus on its more lucrative travel arm. Alongside the news, the retailer – which is famous for selling stationary, books and gifts – has announced that it will close 17 of its high street stores this year. Many have questioned the fate of the 195 high street stores that also include branches of the Post Office.
WH Smith’s travel stores, which are typically found in train stations, airports and hospitals, have benefited from an increase in consumer travel, the retailer has said. “The transformation of our UK travel business from a news, books and convenience retailer to a one-stop-shop for travel essentials is progressing very well,” a spokesperson revealed last year.
