Bobby Duncan, cousin of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, has gone down as one of the club's biggest 'what ifs'. Despite the pressure of his familial ties, the striker seemed to be managing well before his departure in 2019 while still in the academy. The now 23-year-old began his football career at Mossley Hill and St Helens Town before joining Wigan Athletic's academy in 2010.
After a year with Wigan, Manchester City spotted his potential and nurtured him until 2017, when a reported contract dispute left him out of action for a year. In 2018, he moved to his childhood club, Liverpool, for £200,000 and initially, things looked promising.
He scored numerous goals alongside fellow striker Paul Glatzel during the 2018/19 season, including a late equaliser against former club City in the FA Youth Cup final, which Liverpool won on penalties. In July 2019, Duncan's future seemed even brighter when he played in a senior pre-season match against Tranmere Rovers under Jurgen Klopp, scoring in the 6-0 win and earning praise for his performance. However, within a month, things had turned sour for Duncan.
In August 2019, Duncan's agent at the time, Saif Rubie, took to social media to blast Liverpool's sporting director, Michael Edwards, which Duncan himself quote-tweeted. The claims included allegations that Liverpool were keeping Duncan against his will and that he was experiencing mental health issues due to how he was being treated by the club.
