Do you ever find yourself waking up unexpectedly in the middle of the night? BBC presenter Sara Cox might have just the solution for you. Sometimes we can’t pinpoint a reason why we randomly wake up in the early hours of the morning, but nevertheless, it can be frustrating to miss out on a good, uninterrupted night’s sleep.

Hosting the BBC Morning Live show, Cox recently shared some advice with a caller, Steve, who has been suffering from his own sleeping problems. The former BBC Radio One host told Steve and fellow viewers about trick she uses to get back to sleep when she wakes up at 2.30am.

Cox shared that she follows the advice of the late wellbeing expert Michael Mosley, who died in June, 2024. “I found the brilliant doctor Michael Mosley’s little sleep pod, and he gives you some breathing exercises,” the 50-year-old said. “But he also tells you the science behind it, which is super interesting, kind of distracts you from the fact that you’re trying to get back to sleep, and before you know it, because you are doing the breathing exercises, you listen, you snooze back off.”.

Mosley has said that deep breathing in the early hours of the morning can be “quite life-changing” when it comes to falling back asleep. “They’re really simple, called 4-2-4,” he told BBC Radio Wales in 2023. “What you do is you inhale through your nose for four, you hold it for a couple of seconds and then you breathe out through your mouth for kind of for. You do that for a minute or so, your heart rate slows down.”.
