Schools up and down the country have been closed this week as snow, ice and rain have blighted the UK. In Scotland, Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Staffordshire, closures have been prompted by worsening weather, making travel hazardous. While temperatures in London have plunged below freezing, the capital has been spared the worst weather, experiencing just a smattering of snow overnight on Saturday.

However, forecasters have warned that the situation could worsen this week. A yellow weather warning for snow is in place across southern England — including parts of south London. The warning is in place until midnight and the Met Office has said roads and railways are “likely to be affected by snow”, resulting in longer journey times.

Snow “may cause reduced visibility” and “increase the chance of [road] accidents”, it adds. The weather must worsen significantly before any schools shut in the capital. In Lancashire, where more than 20 schools have been shut for three days, heavy snow since the weekend has been significant enough to force road closures.

Some areas have also experienced severe flooding after the snow melted. The Environment Agency yesterday estimated that while 41,000 properties have been protected across England, at least 300 have flooded. Floods minister Emma Hardy said: “My sympathies go out to the people, businesses and communities impacted by the recent flooding across the country.
