World Athletics plan swab tests as part of proposal to tighten transgender rules Athletes competing across all elite women's track and field events may soon be required to provide a cheek swab to prove they are biologically female.

But president Seb Coe, who is aiming to become the next Olympic chief later this year, said scientific developments have prompted World Athletics to revisit their already "robust" guidelines around transgender and DSD athletes.

Governing body World Athletics yesterday launched a new consultation process around their regulations for transgender and difference of sexual development (DSD) athletes.

Lord Coe added: “Preserving the integrity of competition in the female category is a fundamental principle of the sport of athletics and we look forward to this collaborative consultation process with our key stakeholders in this area.”.

And a World Athletics Council meeting next month is expected to set out when the new regulations could be introduced.
