With the holiday festivities behind us, it's time to shift our focus to practical matters. Whether it was at the top of your wish list - or was a pleasant surprise from a well-researched relative - cashmere or silk clothing owners need to get clued up on correct fabric care. Because a set of silk PJs isn’t just for Christmas, it’s for life - if you look after it properly, that is.

“Silk is special. Not just for its soft, luscious touch, but it’s also packed with numerous health benefits doing magic to skin, hair, sleep quality - the list goes on,” agrees Eva Shimanskaya, founder of Apres-midi silk pyjamas. “And yes, caring for silk requires special attention, but it’s not all that bad,” she adds.

Thanks to its unique temperature-regulating properties, silk has a remarkable resistance to moisture absorption - meaning it stays fresher for longer resulting in less frequent laundry cycles. Shimanskaya also recommends giving your silk pieces a quick steam to freshen up rather than over-washing.

However when you can no longer put off washing it, Shimanskaya stresses that each silk garment is unique and that care labels should be your first point of reference. But as a general rule of thumb, your safest bet is to hand-wash it. “It’s quick and simple: fill your basin with cold water and add silk-safe detergent. Soak, stir a little and let it sit for a minute or two. Then, drain and rinse the garment under cold running water,” she explains, adding that you should not use washing powder or strong detergents. Instead use a special liquid for delicate clothes. For extra softness, you can add some hair conditioner.
