An Antiques Roadshow guest was in tears after learning the true value of the gift his late father gave to him. During the season 29 premiere of the PBS show, there was a stop in Arkansas where there was a sterling trophy awarded to baseball star Rogers Hornsby. The owner of the trophy revealed how his late father was 'good friends' with the baseball legend and was given the 1926 trophy - which was later gifted to the Antiques Roadshow guest.
"For people that don't know of Rogers Hornsby, he played 23 seasons between 1915 and 1937," appraiser Grant Zahajko said. "Hornsby was presented this trophy for being voted the most popular player in the National League by the youth of America... [it was presented to him] on opening day in April of 1926.".
He went on to detail more of the sporting star's achievements, adding: "Rogers Hornsby, he won the NL batting title seven times. He's regarded as one of the top hitters ever. Rogers Hornsby's lifetime batting average was .358, so third of all time.". Zahajko revealed it was a sterling trophy made by Gorham that was hand-hammered. "I would say, for you and your family, for insurance purposes, you're going to want to insure this for $10,000," the appraiser then revealed the shocking value of the special trophy.
The guest was lost for words as he teared up from the new knowledge. "There's... there's more to... to that than the money," the guest said. "Took it out of the house, it's like taking my arm off, the way I felt about it. I don't have too many... too much emotions about a lot of things, but my kids and old Hornsby.".
