Doughnut devotees might be left with a sour taste in their mouths after this sweet revelation – it seems the 'jam' in some of our favourite bakery treats is not quite what it seems. As you wander into the local bakery, seduced by that gorgeous scent of fresh dough, only one thing can satisfy your cravings: the classic jam doughnut. It's an indulgent pleasure with its strawberry or raspberry jam centre and a sugary coat, simply irresistible.

Yet, a bombshell has been dropped that could change everything we thought we knew about this confectioner's darling. In a stunning disclosure, Australian chain Donut King – which boasts a branch in Essex – spilled the beans to news.com.au back in 2019. It turns out some jam-packed pastries are harbouring a secret ingredient.

That's right, it ain't all about berries; some bakeries are crafting their 'jam' with an entirely different fruit. Donut King's general manager Andrew Badcock has let slip that instead of traditional jam, what you're getting is actually apple paste or sauce, masquerading in berry flavour and colour.

Badcock laid it bare: "Some food brands use apple paste or sauce as the core ingredient in their raspberry jam recipe. With its natural sweetness and no pips, apple sauce is widely used for its smooth and 'jammy' texture.". So next time you bite into a jelly doughnut, you might just taste the apple of truth. He further explained: "Many customers show a proclivity towards smoother and more consistent textures in their food choices as it's a more familiar and comforting experience. Pips, seeds and smaller grains tend to get caught in teeth and a lot of people don't appreciate that sensation.".
