The LA wildfires now pose a threat to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games as the fires edge ever closer to some sporting venues. These include venues such as the Riviera Golf Club, which will host the golf and UCLA, which will be home to the athletes village.
Venues like the SoFi Stadium and the Carson Stadium could also become targets if the wildfires get worse. At least 11 people have so far been killed in the fires and an estimated 10,000 buildings have been destroyed, including affluent suburbs, churches, Hollywood film locations and a school whose alumni include Will.i.am and Forest Whitaker.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also made a surprise appearance and met with some victims impacted by the wildfires. 13 people are missing and 22 people have been arrested during the wildfires, LA authorities have confirmed. A curfew has been enforced, and police have arrested 22 people for curfew violations, trespassing, burglary and looting in areas affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires, LA county sheriff Robert Luna says.
Around 153,000 people are under evacuation orders, and 166,000 are under evacuation warnings, he has just said in a news conference. ‘An evacuation order is a mandatory directive for residents to leave the area immediately due to imminent danger. ‘Evacuation warnings are precautionary alerts informing residents that they should be prepared to evacuate as the situation may worsen,’ he said.
