BBC Breakfast favourite Charlie Stayt didn't quite get the outcome he hoped for when his co-star Hugh Ferris put a swift end to his musical ambitions. Charlie, at 62, captained the programme alone on Thursday morning as he presented the Boxing Day broadcast solo. In a bid to maintain the festive cheer, Charlie tried a spot of light-hearted banter by suggesting his colleague should burst into song.
After Hugh wrapped up his sports update mentioning Beyonce's recent NFL halftime performance, Charlie asked Hugh which track he'd belt out at karaoke. Hugh began, "I think the last song one I did and it was quite a while ago now..." only to be interrupted by Charlie grabbing a microphone close by on the red sofa, prompting Hugh to swiftly intervene.
The Express reports Hugh declared definitively, "Put that microphone down, Charlie, before I even complete the sentence!. "I've managed to hack to pieces Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John - you're reaching, I'm not even going to entertain it".
Trying to rope weather presenter Carol Kirkwood into his scheme, Charlie quipped: "Carol, you want this to happen don't you?" Carol couldn't help but chuckle and eagerly responded, "Oh yes!". Hugh quipped: "What you don't realise, Charlie, is that I'm closest to the studio's exit." Nonetheless, Charlie nudged his colleague to embrace the holiday spirit, reminding him it was Boxing Day.
