Call the Midwife star Megan Cusack has broken her silence on her character's recent absence, confirming that she has quit the BBC series. Megan joined the show as midwife Nancy Corrigan during season 10, replacing Valerie Dyer - who left Nonnatus House to work at the Hope Clinic in South Africa.

Nancy was recently swept off her feet by pharmaceutical salesman Roger Noble, with the pair getting engaged during last year's Christmas Special. It's been a busy time for Nancy, as she also received a job offer to work at a countryside hospital, which she decided to accept.

While she embarks on a new career path at Netherditch hospital, the character has been largely absent from season 14, which is currently airing on BBC One. Fans were therefore pleased to see Nancy and Roger's return to Poplar teased at the end of Sunday's (February 23) episode, ahead of their upcoming nuptials.

Sadly, they aren't set to remain on screen for too long, as Nancy star Megan Cusack has confirmed that she won't be returning to the series, as she plans to pursue more theatre projects. Speaking to Radio Times, she said: "Sometimes, you've got to step out of your comfort zone to grow. I've learnt so much, but I'm at the start of my career, and I need to take a leap of faith.

"It's bittersweet, really. I've made lifelong friendships there, and I get to take those with me. But when I think about not rocking up to set and seeing Tim, who's part of the grips team, with his guitar hanging out of his van and serenading people at half six in the morning.".

Megan fondly concluded: "It really has been like a family.". Before leaving for Surrey, Roger encouraged Nancy to take the new job, as it would bring her and her daughter Colette closer to him. "It's right in the middle of my sales patch," he told his bride-to-be. "You have to take it, Nancy. You'll be nearer to me until we get married.".

After Nancy's return was teased at the weekend, legions of Call the Midwife fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their excitement, with one writing: "It looks like we're finally getting Nancy back and the wedding next week! It's only taken them all series!".
