Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has opened up about the possibility of a spin-off involving Miss Higgins and Nurse Crane. The actor, who plays Dr Turner in the hit BBC period drama, has praised co-stars Georgie Glen and Linda Bassett for their "superb" on-screen chemistry and urged producers to consider a separate series dedicated to them. "They are so brilliant. As a double act, they are brilliant," Stephen said at a press launch last year.

"One of the lynchpins of our programme, because it focuses on the lives principally of women, has been women and women's lives but the ages have been very open. We've been quite forward-thinking with a whole age range of people. It's not just a young people show.". "When I see scenes [of Miss Higgins and Nurse Crane], you are reminded of that," Stephen continued. "The spin-off needs to happen at some point because these two are just superb.".

Georgie added: "It is rare to be able to have a proper friendship with another woman from different backgrounds. It reminds me of the friendships my mother had.". The Crown star Georgie joined Call the Midwife during season eight in 2018, while Linda has been a series regular since season four - which first aired in 2014. The drama notably follows the lives of nurses and midwives working at Nonnatus House in London's East End. The series is loosely based on Jennifer Worth's best-selling memoirs.

Season 14 is currently airing on BBC One and marks the beginning of a new decade in Poplar. In 1970, Trixie (Helen George) returned from New York, while Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) challenged the Board of Health over criticism of the practices at Nonnatus House. The most recent episode, which was broadcast on Sunday (February 9) night, saw Joyce (Renee Bailey) struggle to care for a mother with postnatal complications.

Meanwhile, a local bin men strike led to an unsanitary waste pile attracting rats outside Nonnatus House, which led to an outbreak of Weil's disease. The disease affected some of the show's much-loved characters, including Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) and Nigel the cat - who sadly passed away from his illness.
