Cheapest place to buy mini eggs, Terry’s chocolate orange eggs and creme eggs this week

SHOPPERS can already pick up Easter treats on supermarket shelves. From fun flavoured hot cross buns to the seasonal essential chocolate eggs. Cadbury favourites are often high on people's shopping lists at this time of year - including mini eggs and the classic creme egg. While Terry's chocolate orange is a Christmas must-have, the brand's mini egg version has been a hit with shoppers. Here we round up the cheapest place to buy each of these favourites this week.

Remember though that prices and offers can change from one day to the next so it's always worth comparing prices to find the best deal. We explain more on how to do that below. Meanwhile, if you're buying online, you'll need to factor in delivery costs too. How much that is depends on the shop, how much you spend, where you live and if you have a supermarket delivery pass. Cadbury mini eggs have been around for decades but are still loved by kids and adults for their creamy chocolate insides and crunchy sugar shell.

They come in a variety of sizes ranging from the standard 80g bag right up to a whopping 1kg. Right now you can pick up the smallest size for just £1.49 in Aldi. You can also get them for this price in Home Bargains, but they come in packs of two for £2.98. B&M has the next closest price at £1.50 followed by Asda at £1.64, and Ocado and Tesco both have them for £1.65, though you'll need a Clubcard for the latter, otherwise they are £1.85.

Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Iceland, Poundland and Waitrose are currently selling mini eggs for £1.85. Meanwhile a 270g bag is £4.25 at Ocado, the cheapest place to buy this size. That's followed by Asda at £4.48 and B&M at £4.75. The remaining shops had them for £4.58. A 308g bag, which contains eight separate bags of the treat, is cheapest at Asda, where you'll pay £4.98. Morrisons and Tesco have them priced at £5.25, while Iceland is charging £5.50, and Sainsbury's £6.50.

Finally the 1kg bags can be picked up cheapest for £14 in Tesco, compared to £15 at Morrisons, Iceland, Waitrose and Ocado. On a price per unit basis, the 1kg bag at Tesco is cheapest overall at £1.40 per 100g. That compares to £1.86 per 100g for the 80g bag, £1.57 per 100g for the 270g bag and £1.62 for the 308g packet. Unit prices make it easier for shoppers to compare similar items of different sizes, explains consumer editor Lynsey Barber.

You should be able to see the product's unit price where its price tag is shown - it may be in small print. It displays the cost of different products by weight, or volume. It helps you easily compare the costs of different products, regardless of their respective sizes. Compare this with the unit price of a similar item - for example, the cost per 100ml or two different types of cola - and choose the item with the lowest unit cost.

For example, if a pack of 15 330ml cans of Coca-Cola Zero is priced at £7.90, then the unit price is shown as 16p per 100ml. Shoppers can compare this to a 2litre bottle of Coca-Cola Zero which is priced at £1.85, as it is also labelled as 9p per 100ml. Major supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's also show these unit prices on loyalty cards. Stores must show unit pricing under legislation known as the Price Marking Order 2004.

With this in mind, paying close attention to the unit prices of the staples in your shopping trolley could save you a fortune in the long term. Terry's chocolate orange mini eggs come with a crispy sugar shell too - just like Cadbury's. But inside you'll find the well-known orange flavour chocolate, just like it's choc oranges. These chocs come in a 70g bag which, instructions suggest, contains three servings.

The cheapest place you can buy them right now is Ocado, where they are on offer for £1.25 instead of £1.50. You'll need to order by February 25 to get the cheaper price and remember Ocado is online only so factor in delivery costs on top. Elsewhere you'll find Asda the next cheapest at £1.32, and Co-op priced at not much more at £1.35. At all the other major supermarkets you'll find these choc treats for £1.50.

Don't forget though that the eggs, and others, could still go down in price or on offer between now and Easter, which this year is on April 20. Cadbury's creme eggs have been on shelves every Easter since 1963 and are as popular as ever. They contain a fondant centre coloured to look like and egg white and yolk, encased in a dairy milk shell. A surprising shop is cheapest for buying Cadbury creme eggs at the moment - they cost just 59p.

You'll find this at Savers, which is perhaps better known for stocking toiletries and household items. It does stock certain food and drink items however, including the Cadbury fave and for cheaper than all the supermarkets. Next cheapest is Asda, which is selling them for 67p each. At Ocado and B&M you'll find the egg for 75p, though at Ocado it's on offer as two for £1.50 (or 85p individually). You'll also find the 85p price tag at Sainsbury's, Iceland and Poundland.
