Prince Christian of Denmark looked quietly confident as he arrived for his first day of military duty in Slagelse - without his royal parents or an aide by his side. The Danish royal, 19, who is heir to the throne, pulled up in a blacked out car and walked towards the gated entrance of the barracks in Slagelse, Denmark with a slip of paper in hand. The son of King Frederik, 56, and Queen Mary, 52, is joining the military as an officer for the Gardehusarregimentet or the Guard Hussar Regiment - a military battle troop and cavalry unit of the Royal Danish Army.

With tan-coloured trainers on and a duffel bag slung over his shoulder, Christian smiled hesitantly as he made his way into the Antvorskov barracks - his new home for the next four months. Slagelse is located 50 miles away from his former residence Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen but his parents did not make an appearance at drop-off today.

During his time with the regiment, Billed-Bladet speculated that the Crown Prince will be given a nickname and asked to cut his hair, as is the norm with recruits. His military training comes after the prince spent three months in east Africa on an adventure he said he would 'never forget'. The Danish royal embarked on an 'extended stay' in east Africa after graduating from high school earlier in 2024. The prince said while the experience was 'completely different', it would be one he never forget. Christian told his one million Instagram followers: 'I have been in East Africa for almost three months. Everyday life down here is something completely different than at home. 'The food, the culture, the climate, the wildlife, the tasks and the people make it an experience I will never forget.

'In recent weeks I've been working with nature preservation. I'm both supervising and registering animals in the bush and taking care of the office on the farm. As the video shows, I get really close to the wild animals when they have their GPS collars replaced during anaesthesia. 'Learning a lot about life down here and have helped build new houses for the employees. And then I played some good football matches with the locals.

'But I am also starting to look forward to returning home to the family in Denmark and celebrating Christmas in a few weeks. 'And now I'm looking forward to a new challenge in February. I'll start working as a military officer at the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse.'. Today's casual look is a far cry from the regal display Christian put on at the New Year's dinner his parents hosted on January 1. The dashing prince put on a handsome display in white tie as he made what is thought to be his first appearance at the event.

The guestlist also included Princess Benedikte, 80, and the Danish King's brother Prince Joachim, who attended with his stunning wife Princess Marie at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Christian is not the only royal teenager who has recently embarked on their training. In early January, Princess Leonor set off on a six-month navy training course that will take her across the United States. The future queen looked solemn as she joined her fellow students, all aspiring officers of the Spanish Navy, for the procession before the three-masted sailing ship left the port in Cadiz.

Meanwhile, her mother Queen Letizia smiled and waved goodbye, while King Felipe documented the milestone by snapping photographs of Leonor. She is following in the footsteps of her father, Felipe, and her grandfather, King Juan Carlos, who also carried out a similar trip.
