Cynthia Erivo, the award-winning actress who starred alongside Ariana Grande in Wicked last year, is known for her impressive and powerful singing voice. The 38 year old has been a musical theatre performer for more than a decade, and is a huge advocate for health and wellness, never shying away from talking about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Previously, Cynthia told Bon Appetit magazine that she had been vegan for 'about five years', and shared some of her favourite foods and drinks that help her feel her best whilst maintaining a busy schedule.
And one beverage, which she said she drank in the mornings, is packed full of health benefits - and it's so cheap too. When asked about her daily routine when she's not travelling, Cynthia raved about hot water and lemon - a classic choice for keeping your vocal chords in good working condition, but it can do a lot more than that.
For example, if you're on a weight loss journey, adding lemon water to your daily routine could help you to reach your goals quicker. This is because lemons contain polyphenols, which is a type of plant compound which acts as an antioxidant. Lemon polyphenols are linked with weight-loss properties in some studies, according to the experts at Holland and Barrett. As well as this, simply drinking water itself is linked with weight loss, as it helps to promote hydration and makes you feel more full. Squeezing a bit of lemon into your water also makes it taste more enjoyable and therefore it's more likely that you'll drink it.
A single lemon costs as little as 28p from Asda too, making it the perfect affordable beverage to enjoy. Lemons are also high in vitamin C, which is a very skin-friendly nutrient. Making sure you get plenty of vitamin C will encourage collagen production in your skin, which is what gives it that plump and healthy appearance. Drinking water is also important for making your skin less dry, so if you’re sipping a daily lemon water, this counts towards your daily hydration.
Finally, the scent of lemon can also work wonders on your mental wellbeing. In aromatherapy, the citrus fruit's zingy smell is known to be uplifting, energising and able to promote positive mood. As well as this, it’s thought that the inhalation of lemon aroma can reduce nervousness, anxiety, exhaustion, and fatigue - which is ideal during the winter months.
