David Tennant's swipe at Donald Trump at the BAFTAs has been revealed after it was cut from the BBC's coverage. The Doctor Who star hosted the glitzy award ceremony on Sunday night as stars from across the big screen descended on London's Royal Festival Hall. It marked his second year in the hosting gig and make a dramatic entrance by performing The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). David kicked off the awards ceremony with a welcome speech that included a series of quips at those in the audience. He managed to make light hearted jokes about Hugh Grant, Timothée Chalamet and his girlfriend Kylie Jenner as well as Selena Gomez. The actor also referenced the films up for awards, including The Brutalist.
He described it as "a film about incredible architecture" before using it as a opportunity to take a swipe at the US president. David quipped: "In fact, it’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump ’s hair in The Apprentice." In his dig, David teased Trump wouldn't have seen the film as he said: "It’s a 15 and it’s not on Nickelodeon," prompting laughter from the crowd.
"Donald Trump... I’m worried. I’ve said his name three times. It’s like Beetlejuice - I’ve summoned him." He continued: "Talking of villains...", pausing for a moment as the audience continued to chuckle. "We’ve got many this year, not just Nosferatu.". The BBC decided to remove David's joke at Trump's expense from their broadcast, which was on a slight delay to the real-time ceremony. During his BAFTA hosting debut last year, David couldn't resist a dig at Trump while discussing the Yorgos Lanthimos film Poor Things, describing the premise as "a child’s brain is put in an adult’s body.".
He then quipped: "And later this year, one of those may be reelected president." During Sunday night's show, David suffered an awkward wardrobe malfunction in another unaired moment. At the start of the awards, David stepped out to make his opening monologue when his microphone wire fell out of his kilt. "We'll cut that bit out," he told the audience. The BBC did just that as the moment was not seen on air. This year's awards saw some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters take home a major BAFTA gong, with Dune, Wicked and Emilia Perez among the winners. Emilia Perez took home the BAFTAs for Film Not in the English Language and Supporting Actress, with Zoe Saldaña picking up the gong.
The Prince and Princess of Wales did not attend the event despite Prince William being the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts due to a simple schedule clash. Jeff Goldblum, Molly-Mae Hague, Pamela Anderson and James Norton were among those how stepped out in their finest looks. Kylie Jenner made a surprise appearance at the awards to support boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, whose hit Dune took home a number of awards throughout the night - including the BAFTAs for sound and visual effects.
