America is holding its breath for a second Donald Trump presidency, with the Republican set to take office in less than a fortnight. The incoming head of state has already lined up potential policies, including buying Greenland – and changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

But while an uncertain four years lies ahead, the US can almost guarantee the incoming head of state will have some bizarre quotes and rambling stories to add to his collection. As president from 2017 to 2021, Mr Trump chalked up quite a collection of highlights. Here are some of his greatest hits from his first term and beyond.

Donald Trump drew the line on Bashar al-Assad in 2017 after the Syrian president’s troops blasted the rebel held town of Khan Sheikoun. His exact quote in the aftermath was: “When you kill innocent children, innocent babies, babies, little babies, with a chemical gas that is so lethal – people were shocked to hear what gas it was. That crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines.”.

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats,” said Mr Trump. “They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”. Maggie Haberman’s 2022 book Confidence Man contained a fantastic quote from Mr Trump that was taken from an interview the pair conducted and then reprinted in the book’s epilogue.
