Grey's Anatomy icon Elle Pompeo looks worlds away from the medical drama in a new true crime series. Known for playing surgeon Meredith Grey, Pompeo now steps into the shoes of mother-of-three Kristine Barnett, in Good American Family. Set to be released on Hulu and Disney+, the drama is inspired by the true story of a couple who adopted a child with a rare form of dwarfism.
While the duo were initially thrilled with their new daughter, they soon began to question her real age and background, leading to a dramatic showdown that "ultimately played out in the tabloids and the courtroom.". In the trailer, released by Hulu on Wednesday afternoon (February 19), viewers watch Kristine and her husband Michael (Mark Duplass) as they are introduced to seven-year-old Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid).
Upon meeting the pair, the young girl gushes: "Are you going to be my mummy and daddy" to which Duplass' character responds: "We sure would love that, if you'll have us.". Disney+ now costs as little as £4.99 a month, but members can get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront on the ad-free Standard or Premium plans.
Disney+ is the only place to stream hit shows like Rivals, The Bear and Shōgun, plus blockbuster franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. However, their excitement is short-lived as Kristine explains to a friend that Natalia's previous adoptive family "gave her back." Soon enough, the little girl's identity is brought into question when she is taken to a doctor and her X-Ray shows that she has "adult teeth.".
The two-minute teaser reaches a dramatic climax when Kristine voices her concerns to her partner, saying: "Michael, I don't think she's a little girl.". The real-life Natalia Grace was adopted in 2010 and had her age brought into question by her new parents, who later took the matter to court.
Her story is set to be dramatized in the forthcoming limited series and "told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma.". Viewers tuning in to the trailer were excited about Pompeo's latest role. One person joked: "Ellen Pompeo without a scrub and white coat? This feels surreal and unreal.".
A second person said: "THIS LOOKS SO GOOD.". Meanwhile, a third fan anticipated the drama set to unfold: "I know the real case this is based on, and it is wild - with so many twists and turns. Nothing is as it seems.". Good American Family also features Dulé Hill (Suits), Christina Hendricks (Good Girls), Sarayu Blue (Expats) and Jenny O’Hara (My Sister Sam) as recurring guests.
