Everton salvaged a dramatic late equaliser in a chaotic final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park against Liverpool. Mohamed Salah looked to be sending Liverpool nine points clear at the top of the Premier League until James Tarkowski lashed a stunning effort into the top corner with 100 minutes on the clock. Chaos broke out after the final whistle with Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure sent off after a wild brawl right in front of the supporters.

Reds boss Arne Slot was also sent off by referee Michael Oliver after an animated discussion with the match official. With Everton leaving Goodison at the end of the season to move into their new home up the road, it was always going to be a special evening. Beto gave the hosts a dream start after 11 minutes, picked out by Jarrad Branthwaite’s quick-thinking free kick to coolly slot past Alisson Becker.

Their lead lasted just five minutes however with Salah racking up his 20th assist of the season, brilliantly picking out Alexis Mac Allister who guided his header home. With 14 minutes of the game left, Salah was at it again, pouncing on Curtis Jones’ deflected effort and drilling home to give the visitors the lead. Liverpool looked home and dry, heading nine points clear of Arsenal at the summit of English football.

Tarkowski set up one hell of a party on the blue half of Merseyside, however, finding the top corner with a outstanding strike to level the contest. Fans spilled onto the pitch to celebrate the last Merseyside derby goal at the stadium but there was a nervous wait for everyone with a VAR check lasting over two minutes. The goal stood, sparking more celebrations and an almighty tussle involving both sides after the final whistle with Jones taking issue with Doucoure’s decision to celebrate in front of the away supporters.
