An expert shared a common habit we’re all guilty of which could be causing damp and mould in our homes. With winter in full swing and temperatures continuing to drop, it can be harder and harder to get clothes and other washing dry. Nothing beats the fresh aroma of hanging clothes outside to dry but many of us have little choice other than to opt for indoor methods for the foreseeable.

This leaves many stuck with cumbersome clothing racks and airers holding damp clothes for days on end, or radiators littered with items in a desperate bid to try and speed up the dying process. With searches for ‘how to dry clothes in winter’ skyrocketing by 226% in the last month, experts at Shark Clean shared how to dry your clothes indoors this winter - and why we need to avoid using radiators to get clothes dry.

While it may seem like making the most of your central heating, drying clothes on radiators can increase the amount of moisture in the air, which can cause damp and mould. It can also raise your energy bills, as the heat is being used to dry your clothes rather than heat your room, so you may need to keep the radiators on for longer to feel the benefit.

Instead, hang laundry on a clothes-horse positioned in a well ventilated room. Avoid overcrowding your clothes airer as this will slow down drying. In the popular Reddit forum AskUK, one person penned: “Do you dry washed clothes by putting them on the radiators? My family never did this, but my wife’s does as standard.
