A flight attendant has revealed that leaving a towel by the hotel door is one of her top tips for ensuring a peaceful night's sleep. The life of a cabin crew member often involves sleeping in hotels across the globe, particularly for those working on long haul flights. Being alone in a foreign country after a long shift can leave some flight attendants feeling uneasy. American cabin crew member Cici has a checklist she follows whenever she stays in a hotel to ensure she can rest easy. For Cici, safety is paramount during work stop overs or leisure stays, so she always adheres to a security routine after checking in.
One of her key safety measures involves taking a small towel from the bathroom and wrapping it around her room door's safety latch. She then closes the latch lock with the hand towel, making it more difficult to open. According to this travel expert, it's also crucial to "always count the number of doors to the exit stairwell", ensuring you know where to go in case of a fire when visibility may be poor - and for the same reason, it's important to actually read the security and evacuation maps found on doors and corridors.
Once she's checked the evacuation routes and ensured the door is securely shut, Cici's final check is the peephole. If there's no cover for it on the door, "just take some tissue and shove it in there so nobody can see inside your room". When it comes to allowing strangers into her room, the flight attendant has a strict, no-nonsense policy. "If someone knocks at the room and says they are housekeeping, but you didn't order anything, call the front desk. This could also be room service, security or anything you weren't expecting," she advised.
