Former Chelsea star Oscar has returned home to Sao Paulo after almost a decade in Shanghai where he cemented his status as the Chinese Super League’s most prolific export. The ex-Brazil international bade an emotional farewell to Shanghai Port following eight years in China where he earned an estimated £166m in wages.
But the 33-year-old also scored 77 goals in 248 appearances for the club across all competitions having signed from Chelsea in 2016 when the CSL was booming. And while many foreign stars jumped ship when the league suffered its bust, Oscar stayed put earning a salary widely reported to have been worth £400,000 per week.
Now he is heading back to Sao Paulo at the end of his Shanghai contract and his hometown club, whom he began his career with, are hailing him as a “super reinforcement.”. Yet the return is bittersweet for Oscar who said: "Today officially marks the end of a chapter that has profoundly influenced my life," he said. "After eight years wearing this shirt, it is difficult to describe the complex emotions I feel as I say goodbye.
"These were intense years, filled with hard work, dedication, and, above all, victories. Together, we won everything possible, and this was only achieved thanks to the unconditional support of everyone who is part of this club and its fans. I want to thank the club for believing in me from day one.
