SHOPPERS are furious over the "laughable" price of security-tagged Cadbury Mini Eggs, blasting "only a fool would pay that". The bag was spotted at a WH Smith branch in Newcastle this week. It contained 1kg worth of the treats - with the same quantity on sale at Tesco and B&M for £14. An astonished customer posted a picture of the item to X, with the caption: "They better hatch dragons for £19.". The post racked up nearly 800,000 views and 27,000 likes.

Equally outraged shoppers rushed to the comments, with one saying "only a fool would pay that" as another added "they need to be covered in gold for that price!". Another expressed doubt as to whether the picture was even real. They wrote: "Whaaatt? Is that a real price or photoshopped?? Forget normal dragons, I’d want my own Dracarys to hatch from those for nineteen blooming quid.". And a third echoed: "There better be a solid gold egg in there for that price.".
Meanwhile, other commenters honed in on the security tag seen wrapped around the item. One said: "Lad why's the security tag on it?". And another wrote: "The audacity to put an alarm on it.". At the same Northumberland Street branch, 360G Mini Eggs bars and 335G Cadbury selection bags, consisting of Mini Eggs, dairy milk eggs and Creme Eggs, were on sale for a more reasonable £6.50. One eagle-eyed shopper sad: "I couldn’t believe it when I saw popular Easter chocolate had security tags on them.
"It made me feel like a criminal when I was searching for treats. "I know there has been a rise in shoplifting recently but I didn’t think it would come to this.". It comes as the stationery giant also placed the humble Freddo bar, once famed for its 10p price tag, on sale for £1. A post on the social media network Reddit shows a photo of the popular 18g snacks costing £1 each in a WHSmith store in Carlisle.
Fans of the Freddo bar were quick to take offence at the huge hike. One said: “£1 for a Freddo is disgusting. Daylight robbery at its finest!”. While another user hinted the discovery was bordering on apocalyptic. They wrote: “I showed my wife this picture, and asked whether it was time to start burning things down.”. Meanwhile, shoppers were given a comprehensive guide to the cheapest places to buy Mini Eggs in the run-up to Easter.
In at number one was Aldi, with 80g bags going for just £1.49. The Sun has reached out to WH Smith and Cadbury for comment. We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs... Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars.
Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere. Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal. Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced. They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.
