Getting rid of moss from patios can be a tiresome job - especially when it seems to return within days. However, there's a cost-effective solution that doesn't involve harsh chemicals. Sam Christie, a gardening guru and founder of Christie's Landscapes, has revealed that the best way to permanently eliminate moss is by using a homemade concoction of white vinegar and baking soda. He explained: "You can use products that are readily available at home, non-toxic, and biodegradable. Besides, they won't pose a threat to your plants or pets, so it's a must-have if you want to have clean paving slabs.".

This "powerful cleaning agent" will kill moss as vinegar contains acetic acid, which easily penetrates the moss and burns it while baking soda is a mild alkali, effective at dehydrating the moss to ensure it doesn't return, reports the Express. Since vinegar is acidic, it can harm any nearby greenery so avoid trying this homemade remedy on a rainy day as it can easily spill onto grass. Also, remember to move any plant pots that could accidentally get splashed with the homemade mixture. Sam advised: "The acidity of the vinegar-water solution will lift the dirt and grime, which means that you'll only need a brush in cleaning. So, you don't need to use other equipment which may be complicated to use or expensive.".

He added: "Also, it is safer than other cleaning agents because it only produces CO2 and water. Its effectiveness can also be improved when it is mixed with soap and tap water. Since baking soda has alkaline properties, it neutralizes the minerals in the water, so it magnifies the soap's cleaning properties.". Essentials you'll need:. Guidance:. Begin by tidying up your patio or driveway, sweeping away any leaves or debris. Prepare a bucket of hot water combined with white vinegar and baking soda; toss in some dish soap if available.

Liberally douse the mossy patches with the concoction. Let the mixture work its magic on the moss for a good 15 to 20 minutes, allowing the vinegar ample time for extermination. Post-soak, the deceased moss should easily scrub off with a brush. Following the removal of all the moss and grime, give the patio a rinse with a garden hose or another batch of plain water. Allow the sun to dry the paving before returning your chic garden furniture or pretty plant pots to their spots.
