Patios are notorious for being magnets for grime, oil marks, pesky weeds and the ever-encroaching moss. Once moss finds a foothold, it can be a real headache to eradicate. Rowan Cripps, director of Infinite Paving, cautions that moss is quite the opportunist, warning "will grow anywhere that there is an opportunity". It's prone to colonising the gaps between paving slabs and, if unchecked, will conquer your entire patio.
Moss favours areas where dirt has settled after being carried by blustery winter winds, and it thrives in spots that are moist, damp and shaded. To tackle this green invader, Cripps recommends using white vinegar, explaining: "While white vinegar is relatively popular for killing weeds and lichens, it is just as effective at getting rid of moss as it is getting rid of weeds.". He elaborates: "This is because the vinegar helps to break down the unwanted moss and resultantly makes it far easier to unroot and remove." He assures that not only will the moss vanish, but it's also unlikely to return any time soon, reports the Express. Crafting the vinegar solution is a breeze – just mix some vinegar with an equal amount of water in a spray bottle.
Douse the affected areas with the concoction and let it work its magic for about an hour. After the waiting period, a soft-bristled brush should easily dispatch the surface moss. Rowan pointed out that diluting the patio cleaner solution and opting for a soft-bristled brush over a harder one is essential to "do not cause any damage" to the pavers' surface. By following these two simple pieces of advice, you'll successfully "get rid of the unwanted moss" without causing any extra harm.
