Gary Neville disagrees with Arne Slot’s Liverpool rule that players stay in their own houses before a home match – something Virgil van Dijk welcomes. Since taking over in the summer, Slot and his Reds have sauntered to a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League – losing just a single game so far. They are also unbeaten in the Champions League to date as well.

Slot hasn't made many changes since taking the reins at Anfield, although he has instituted a new policy which allows players to stay in their own houses instead of a hotel the night before a home fixture. That has been welcomed by club captain Van Dijk – who has played every minute of his side’s assault on the English top-flight this term.

However, this newly introduced rule isn’t something that former Manchester United skipper Neville would necessarily be a fan of going by his previous comments during his time at Old Trafford. Speaking to ex-United team-mate Roy Keane on Stick to Football last year, Neville insisted: “We loved it. We liked it [staying in a hotel Friday night]. Switch on – everyone getting sleep, no one’s got kid problems, crying.”.

Yet, speaking exclusively to Mirror Football about the remarkable beginning to Slot’s tenure, Liverpool’s defensive talisman Van Dijk offered a different outlook. "It's everyone's own preference, but it's the rules now [Changes to hotel the night before games, players now stay at home]. Personally, I like to sleep in my own bed, be with my family, and so it works out quite well,” Van Dijk stated.
