Gary Neville believes Ruben Amorim was going in the same direction as Erik ten Hag - even before Monday's horror show vs Newcastle. The new Red Devils boss has endured a rollercoaster start to life at Old Trafford since replacing the Dutchman. He has just two Premier League wins to his name.
Since arriving at the club, the Portuguese coach has opted to shuffle his side around game-by-game. But Neville does not believe that is the best approach for his former side. Speaking before Monday evening’s defeat to Newcastle, the former England defender said: “It was something Erik ten Hag used to do and then even in game, changing up the defence, it seems like, every single match.
"There was a game against Nottingham Forest that was in that list and I thought he picked his best team that day I thought; 'Here we go', he's actually going to settle on this XI and then stick with them. "It was 1-1 at half-time and I thought they'd played some good stuff in the first half. They had two individual errors at the start of the second half. And then he took off two of his back three and took off Bruno Fernandes - and almost threw the baby out with the bathwater a little bit - and it's been a little like that since, whereby he's never settled on a team.
"I am going to ask him that when I speak to him very shortly about the fact that is it now time to create some stability. They've not picked up his idea, but how difficult is it for the players to pick up the idea if they've not got that pattern, if you like, of playing together. So it is something that I think needs to be asked.".
