Grantchester season nine is soon to debut, but how is Will Davenport going to make his exit?. ITV viewers are over the moon to see the 1960s-set drama return to the small screen with DI Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green) and Reverend Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) back as the village’s crime-solving duo.

Actor Brittney has been in Grantchester since season four, following the departure of his predecessor, Happy Valley star James Norton, as Reverend Sidney Chambers. Now, after six years in the hit show, Brittney is hanging up his dog collar after it was announced last year that the 34-year-old would be making his exit.

However, Will won’t be leaving the village in the debut episode of season nine which airs on Wednesday, January 8, at 9pm on ITV and ITVX. His final scenes in Grantchester will not be shown until episode two, and Brittney previously revealed under what circumstances the beloved reverend will leave.

In a Q&A, Brittney said: “In this series, he’s married, he’s now a stepfather with a baby on the way, and then he’s got a baby. “Life seems brilliant; he’s with his family, he’s firmly in the world of Grantchester, but then he gets an offer from the Bishop that he may or may not be able to refuse.”.

Ahead of the episode, it has been teased that Geordie and Will will investigate the death of a magician as the circus comes to town. It soon becomes clear, though, that Will is struggling with the idea that he could be “coasting” in Grantchester. His congregation is also shrinking, and former curate Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) is even missing church, which puts doubt in Will’s mind.
