A leading cruise expert has a key piece of advice for holidaymakers gearing up for a maritime adventure - keep a lid on the luggage. Packing for any holiday can be a puzzle, and it's no different for cruisers, whether they're newbies or nautical veterans. However, Gene Sloan, better known to fans as The Points Guy, urged passengers not to overpack their bags with too many items of clothing.

His advice is straightforward: "Use this strategy when packing for a cruise: Throw all the clothes you think you'll need on a cruise in a pile, and then take away half of them. You won't need them. "Trust us. Most cruising these days is casual, and you really only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage." Once upon a time, setting sail was synonymous with dressing to the nines every evening.

But nowadays, black-tie dinners aboard cruises are more the exception than the rule, freeing passengers from the need to stuff their suitcases with costume changes. Although some formal nights do remain, casual wear is now de rigueur across most of the ship, reports the Express.

Gene's hot tip also comes with practical fashion advice: opt for versatile garments that offer various combinations and be mindful of the weather in your ports of call. And if you do find yourself at sea with a shrinking wardrobe, fear not - Gene points out that many liners boast onboard laundry services.
