James Bond fans may have to wait as long as three years until the new 007 is unleashed on screen. That is the insight of a close ally of executive producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, the acclaimed Bond director Martin Campbell. English director Campbell also confirmed that the two Bond bosses have ongoing issues with their new bosses Amazon. He even teased that there is a "legal issue" rolling between Eon Productions and their current studio heads.
But the director, who directed Casino Royale and Goldeneye, insists that the replacement for Daniel Craig will appear on the big screen before streaming - and that there will not be a TV series spin off. Reports of off screen drama have rife since MGM, which oversaw Bond, was bought by Amazon. When asked when the next Bond movie will come out, Campbell replied: "I think it'll be two years away, three years away.".
Campbell, speaking to Men's Journal, then dropped a bombshell twist in the issues behind the scenes, when asked whether he will be brought back to reboot Bond. He admitted: "I mean, is there going to be another Bond? That's the question. I mean there's this legal thing right now. Which, by the way, when I did GoldenEye, there was a six-year gap between the last Dalton one and that. "And now, of course, they have this problem with Amazon. It's ironic. It's sort of the same thing. God knows what's going to happen. And also the director choice will come from Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, who are fantastic producers.".
Campbell shut down suggestions that a Bond streaming TV show was also being planned. "No. I know Barbara will absolutely stick to her guns and say this is a theatrical experience. This is not going to go to streaming immediately. I know she'll stick to her guns. Bond is always an event picture. That's the point. A Bond film. Wow. I always love it when a new Bond comes out.". Campbell oversaw the important comeback of Bond in 1995. Fans had to wait six years then for a writers' strike to finish and Pierce Brosnan to be out of a TV deal to make Golden Eye.
He was brought back to introduce Craig to audiences as the new Bond in Casino Royale in 2006. Campbell also said that the star of his latest action flick Cleaner Taz Skylar has a shot of being 007 in the future. "Taz is such a sort of charismatic guy, isn't he? He was great to work with as well. I mean, look, he looks pretty young. But, on the other hand, they're going to have to cast someone young-ish because he has to go to five movies.".
At the weekend Bond actress Jane Seymour, who has remained friends with Barbara Broccoli ever since her father Albert Broccoli green lit her in Live And let Die, said she thought Bond will stay on the big screen. Seymour said: "I am pretty certain that Bond will always have its theatrical release. It just has to. Because I think when you have that big world and everyone's going, 'wow' with all that's going on. It's kind of nice to have (that experience) sitting next to someone else that's experiencing it at the same time.“.
Daniel Craig's final film No Time To Die was released in September 2021 and the following year in June 2022 Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said the next Bond film was a long way from starting. At the time she told Deadline: "There isn't a script and we can't come up with one until we decide how we're going to approach the next film because, really, it's a reinvention of Bond. We're reinventing who he is, and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.".
That deadline has now passed and the transition to find a new 007 has not been smooth with no leading man named. Gaps between Bond films vary with No Time To Die delayed by Covid and coming out six years after Spectre. But in the two decades of films before that though, the 007 films tended to come out every 2-4 years.. Like this story?
