As the 59th edition of the Super Bowl got underway on Sunday evening, the stakes couldn't be higher as the Kansas City Chiefs did battle with the Philadelphia Eagles in the hopes of securing an all important victory. Yet as the two athletic heavyweights did battle on the field, fans were left on the edge of their seats when the halfway point heralded the arrival of Kendrick Lamar for his half-time show performance.
The rapper, 37, took to the stage to perform a variety of hits, including his now Grammy-award winning diss track of Drake, to the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. After months of tense speculation about which hits would be included in his set list, Lamar elected to add “Not Like Us” to his performance, meaning that more than 73,000 fans got to scream along as he rapped, “And it’s probably A minor.”.
Yet aside from the songs, it was also the added star power that got fans talking, as the half-time show included a surprise cameo from tennis ace Serena William s and Hollywood heavyweight Samuel L Jackson, in the patriotic guise of Uncle Sam. For her part in the proceedings Serena took to the field to dance alongside Kendrick and showcase her impressive dance moves. Meanwhile, decked out in red, white and blue, Pulp Fiction star Jackson delighted fans at home tuning into the broadcast as he narrated the scene unfolding before viewers, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts about the unexpected cameo - and how it was the highlight of the entire show.
One fan wrote: “ Samuel L Jackson was a wonderful surprise, before another fan added: “This is one of my favourite Super Bowl Halftime shows that I have seen yet. I may not be a fan of Kendrick Lamar's music, but I respect the storytelling talent and seamless flow in his music. The impressive choreography, seeing Samuel L. Jackson as Uncle Sam, and the Diss was top!”. A third fan also echoed the sentiment adding: "Samuel L. Jackson's epic Uncle Sam cameo during Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show was the surprise we didn't know we needed!”.
Before a fourth fan concluded: “Samuel L Jackson as uncle sam was literally the highlight of my night.”. However, not everyone was so easily impressed with several other viewers branding the show the “worst” they had ever seen. “That was hands down the worst Super Bowl halftime show I have seen in my lifetime!” said one viewer who didn’t mince their words. A second viewer also agreed, adding: “What’s worse the Chiefs offence or the Halftime show?,” before a third viewer chimed in: “Worst halftime show ever, not a fan.”.
