Police are searching for a suspect believed to have raped a man in his twenties in Newcastle city centre. The victim was attacked early Sunday morning, around 2 am, near Pottery Lane by a ‘stocky, muscular’ man. The suspect is described as around 6ft tall and white with a tanned complexion, who spoke with a strong Geordie accent and was wearing a dark hooded top.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation. ‘An investigation was immediately launched by detectives from Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department and the victim is currently being supported by specially-trained officers,’ the police said.

‘Extensive enquiries have been ongoing, including a review of CCTV, to identify the person responsible. They are particularly keen to speak to a potential witness, a man believed to be in his 40s, who was walking in the area.’. DCJennifer Myles added: ‘This is an extremely difficult time for the victim and they continue to be supported by specialist officers.

‘As soon as we were made aware of the report, we began an investigation and have been carrying out extensive enquiries. We are now appealing to the public for help and asking anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or anyone who has information about what happened to come forward.

‘This includes a potential witness, a man who was walking in the area. If you do have any information – no matter how insignificant you think it may be – please do come forward as it really could assist with our enquiries.”. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
