Less than a year after McDonald’s launched its beverage-focused spin-off restaurant CosMc’s in Texas, the fast food giant is shuttering half of them. McDonald’s announced on Thursday that it is closing three of its six CosMc’s in the Lone Star State, which has all but one of the special concept stores it has opened in the US.

The chain did not immediately share which locations will be axed. Two CosMc’s are in San Antonio and four are in North Texas. CosMc’s offers coffee, tea, slushies, lemonades and energy drinks that can be customized. The locations sell McDonald’s Egg McMuffin and the M&M McFlurry as well as hashbrown bites and McPops sweet treats, but not burgers or other meal items.

The first CosMc’s in Texas opened at Preston and Campbell roads in Dallas-Fort Worth in March 2024. As of Monday evening, only seven CosMc’s stores appeared in the locations tab of its website. They included Potranco Road and FM 1957 in San Antonio, Campbell Road in Dallas, McPherson Boulevard in Fort Worth and W Stacy Road in Allen, in Texas. There is also a store on N Weber Road in Bolingbrook, Illinois, which was the first CosMc’s to open in December 2023.

One store in Texas was no longer listed, possibly because it has already closed its doors. McDonald’s on Thursday also announced that it plans to open two more smaller format locations of CosMc’s in Texas this year, meaning it may not be over for the chain.
‘Since opening CosMc’s, we have had the benefit of testing out different location sizes and setups – from revamping larger restaurant spaces to building smaller prototype locations that focus more on the drive-thru and digital experience. We learned that the smaller format stores allow us to test new, unique circumstances that are reflective of our customer base,’ stated the company.
