A young woman has vowed never to go back into the ocean after a huge shark grabbed her by the foot in a horror attack while on holiday. Summer Layman thought she was “going to die” after a shark attacked her and her friend Rileigh Decker while they were enjoying a swim in the Bahamas. The pair were paddling in the tropical waters of Bimini Bay on Friday, after jumping into the water from a friend's boat when they were both bitten by what they believe was a bull shark.
Speaking to NBC's Today programme the 24-year-old woman said the pair were swimming when Rileigh, 20, felt a “tug” on her leg. “It was very scary, the fear of thinking you’re going to die in the moment.” Their friends made a quick tourniquet from a towel and rope for Rileigh, before realising Summer's foot had been “shredded”. The two were rushed to a hospital in the Bahamas, where one of the women’s injuries were listed as “serious,” according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force. They were later taken back to Florida where Summer underwent two surgeries.
A police statement read: “Police in Bimini are investigating an alleged shark attack involving two female tourists that occurred around 6.30pm on Friday, February 7. Initial reports indicated that the victims, both USA residents, sustained injuries while swimming in the waters at Bimini Bay. "They received initial treatment at a local clinic before being airlifted to New Providence for further medical attention. One of the victim’s injuries is listed as serious. Investigations are ongoing.”.
