Morrisons is giving away free carrots once again this Christmas, to help children “prepare for Santa and Rudolph”. Supermarket shoppers will be able to pick up free wonky carrots - which are vegetables that are either oversized or misshapen - in stores on December 21 and December 22. During the festive period, Morrisons carrot sales more than double in the week before Christmas compared to the previous week. They will be available in stands at the front of stores and shoppers will be able to help themselves.

You don't need to make any other purchase. Kids are traditionally supposed to leave out a mince pie and glass of milk for Santa, plus carrots for Rudolph and his fellow reindeer. But as well as helping families celebrate Christmas, the supermarkets say the move is designed to help reduce food waste.

Andy Todd, Carrot Buyer at Morrisons, said: “Thousands of families across the nation will excitedly be preparing for Father Christmas’s visit soon and we wanted to play our part in helping to ensure he and his team are well fed. Our tasty wonky range helps our British farmers reduce waste and offers customers a delicious alternative at a fraction of the cost.”.

It comes as supermarkets have kicked off their price war for the cheapest Christmas dinner. Aldi has launched a value Christmas dinner for six people for £11.45, or £1.91 per head. This includes a Small Fresh British Turkey which costs £8.85, or 2.95 per kg, while the vegetables on offer are Nature’s Pick Potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots and Parsnips, all 15p each.
