A man has come under fire after planning an elaborate trip away for his female best friend’s birthday - without his wife. Platonic friendships with the opposite sex are absolutely possible, and can be very rewarding. When in a romantic relationship, maintaining friendships is still important but respect and boundaries must be in place for the health and wellbeing of all.
One man was left stunned after his wife was upset to learn he planned to take his best friend abroad while leaving her behind. The trip came about as part of a promise the fella made to his friend, dubbed ‘A’ in his Reddit post explaining the situation, when they were both teenagers.
The 30-year-old has been friends with A, who’s currently 29, since they were around 15 or 16 years old. She was a smoker but, knowing “the risks”, she wanted to quit. On the ‘AITA’ forum, the man explained: “As encouragement to get her to quit, I made a deal with her. We both share a love of cars and motorsports so the deal was that if she never picked up a cigarette again, I would fly us out to and get grandstand tickets for her favourite F1 race, obviously once we were older and not broke teenagers. Admittedly, 16-year-old me did not take all the costs into consideration but I still wanted to uphold my end of the deal.”.
He described his relationship with A as “sibling like”, and said his “wife knows that”, reiterating “nothing has ever happened” between them. A even helped to set him up with his wife, 30, and acted as a “grooms-woman” at their wedding.
