Real Christmas trees look absolutely stunning and smell divine, but they can also be a nightmare to look after. Even if you have one of those fake snow blankets designed to catch fallen pine needles, they'll inevitably find their way onto the carpet and somehow etch themselves in the fibres. While it might be tempting to just vacuum the little sticks up, doing so could cause a blockage and result in serious damage to your appliance.

Unless you have the patience of a saint and are willing to manually pick up each fallen needle - you may want to take a look and this genius hack. It only costs 59p and will make sure your carpet is spotless for the big day without killing your beloved vacuum.

Experts over at the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) say a kitchen staple you probably already have in your cupboards could be the key to your Christmas Tree dilemma. "Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the problematic pine needles and then use a dustpan and brush to sweep them up," they said. "The powder will coat the needles, creating friction that keeps them from clinging to your carpet.".

You can pick up bicarbonate of soda from your nearest supermarket or general store for less than £1. For example, Sainsbury's is currently selling a 180g tub for just 59p, which can also be used for a slew of cleaning tasks including deodorising your bins and rugs, unclogging drains, and even making sure your washing machine stays sparkling new on the inside.
