A stranger-than-fiction Netflix series has left stunned viewers declaring it the 'best documentary' they have seen on the streaming platform. The three-episode true crime series follows a strange chain of events that unfolded in the small Mississippi town of Tupelo following the alleged discovery of a human head and other body parts in a hospital fridge. The town was famously the birthplace of Elvis Presley, with the residents considering the late singer almost a religious figure.
At the centre of the story - which unfolds over several years - is Paul Kevin Curtis who teams up with his brother to form an Elvis impersonating double act, Double Trouble. But while working as a cleaner to support his family outside of his act, Kevin's grisly discovery in a hospital morgue sends him spiralling into a world of conspiracy theories.
The official logline reads: "A small-town feud, an internet conspiracy, an Elvis impersonator, black market body parts, and an assassination attempt on the President. Welcome to Mississippi where this jaw-dropping story spirals from local drama to a national scandal. Buckle up for a wild ride. This isn’t fiction — it’s Tupelo.".
The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga only released on the platform in early December, but it has already made a splash with viewers who have been singing its praises online. It was created by the directors behind Wild, Wild Country, another hit documentary series on Netflix which followed the controversial cult leader, Osho.
