From grand castles to stunning coastal views - enjoy the UK's most scenic views from the comfort of your own seat. Despite having a reputation for always being delayed or cancelled, trains are a great way to explore the very best of Britain's countryside and don't always cost a fortune.

Trainline's resident rail historian Tim Dunn has compiled some of the best train journeys in the world - from the iconic Orient Express to Canada's glass-domed Rocky Mountaineer. The Cambrian Coast in Wales also made the list, and was branded one of the most 'scenic' routes in the UK.

This three and a half hour train journey starts off in Pwllheli (meaning 'salt-water pool') - a bustling little market town which sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pwllheli is famed for its open-air market in the summer, stunning sandy beaches, and was even designated a 'European Centre of Excellence' for sailing. Just make sure you sit on the right hand side to get a good view.

You will hug the coast for the majority of the journey, which ends in Aberystwyth. Here, you'll find the oldest pier in Wales (built in 1864), and a bustling high-street filled with independent coffee shops, restaurants, and clothing shops. "What's so great about this route is that when it weaves away from the coast slightly inland, you'll be treated to lovely views of Snowdonia National Park," Tim said. "Our favourite highlight for this route, however, has to be the crossing of Barmouth Bridge around the midway point in the journey. A close second would be the majestic castles dotted along the line, but we’ll leave those for you to discover.".
