Nick Cave has revealed the song he wants played at his funeral – and it may surprise you. The Where the Wild Roses Grow artist confirmed his choice while responding to a fan question on his blog. The 67-year-old singer, best known in the UK for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds hit albums Dig Lazarus Dig and Push the Sky Away, famously keeps The Red Hand Files unmoderated, encouraging fans to ask him ‘anything’.

After answering a very emotional question about preventing loss in response to his recent appearance on BBC’s Desert Island Discs, he chucked in confirmation of the track he’d pick at the end, replying to another fan’s question with: ‘Oh, and Damian, please, I Am A God by Kanye West.’. On the long-running Radio Four programme, guests choose eight of their favourite records, and Nick opted for the same song, from Kanye’s album Yeezus, as one of his tracks.

‘This became, weirdly enough, a kind of family song,’ he shared when he was talking about why he’d chosen it. ‘My kids love it, Susie [Nick’s wife] loves it, I love it. It’s an extremely playful, extremely dark, complex song where on the one hand, Kanye is presenting himself as a god, and then towards the end of the song, he’s screaming in terror.’. He called it ‘an unbelievably deep song, in my view’ as he spoke about the track being one he listens to in the car.

‘This is a song that I value on a personal level, and actually I just think it’s a complete, amazing work of art,’ he added. True Nick fans will already know the high regard in which he holds the US rapper. The Bad Seeds star has previously described Kanye as ‘the greatest artist’ on the planet, writing on his blog in 2020: ‘Making art is a form of madness – we slip deep within our own singular vision and become lost to it.

‘There is no musician on Earth that is as committed to their own derangement as Kanye, and in this respect, at this point in time, he is our greatest artist.’. The Australian-born star was previously married to Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro for six years, with their son Luke born in 1991. His son Jethro was born just 10 days earlier to Beau Lazenby in Melbourne, with him only learning Nick was his father aged eight.

Jethro died aged 31 in May 2022. Nick has been married to model and designer Susie Bick, who co-founded cult fashion label The Vampire’s Wife, since 1999. They share twin sons Arthur and Earl, born in 2000, with the parents also suffering the loss of Arthur, aged 15, in July 2015. An inquest into the youngster’s death revealed that he had died by falling 60ft from a cliff after trying LSD for the first time.

‘I was forced to grieve publicly – and that was helpful, weirdly enough,’ Cave said of his heartbreaking losses in an interview with The Guardian last year. ‘It stopped me completely shutting the windows and bolting the doors and just living in this dark world.’. He also shared that he had been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support he received in the wake of Arthur’s death. ‘I had letter after letter addressed to ‘Nick Cave, Brighton’. It was a really extraordinary thing,’ he recalled. ‘And that attention, and sense of community, was extremely helpful to me.’.
