Spring may currently feel like a little way off but when it does arrive it will provide the chance to hang laundry outside on the line without worrying about unexpected rain or hail. A laundry expert has shared top tips for making the most of those lovely spring breezes to get your clothes dry swiftly and wrinkle-free. There's a "correct" way to hang your clothes out, starting with heavier items like jeans and sweaters, then moving on to lighter garments such as shirts and socks.

The key is to space your clothes evenly to prevent tangling and use pegs to keep them in place. For tops, it's best to hang them from the bottom, while trousers should be hung from the top. The laundry specialists noted: "If you hang shirts and jumpers from the bottom edge it'll stop the shoulders getting stretched and avoid unsightly peg marks on the shoulders.".

They also recommend hanging shirts on hangers that are pinned to the line to prevent shoulder stretching or wrinkles. Some even suggest hanging trousers from the bottom because pegging the thick waistband can slow down drying. When dealing with delicate items, the experts propose using scraps of fabric from old clothes under the pegs to protect the item and prevent any marks.

When it comes to drying bulkier items like sheets and blankets, a handy tip is to fold them in half and then peg them up by the open ends to "stop a harsh crease forming". To prevent them from sagging or being blown away, just add a couple of extra pegs in the middle.
