‘Not good enough!’ – Tottenham slammed for signing £50m Chelsea flop

Tottenham have been slammed over their decision to sign Germany international Timo Werner following his struggles at Premier League rivals Chelsea. Much was expected of Werner following his £50m move to Stamford Bridge in 2020 but he underwhelmed before returning to RB Leipzig two years later for half that amount. Werner scored 34 goals in his last season in Germany before moving to the Premier League but failed to produce those numbers at Chelsea, scoring ten league goals in 56 appearances.

Given the forward’s disappointing spell at Chelsea, former Premier League defender William Gallas was surprised to see Tottenham bring him back to the English top-flight. Spurs signed Werner on loan for the second-half of the season last January before extending his loan spell for the entirety of the current campaign. Tottenham have the option to sign Werner on a permanent transfer for around £8.5m in the summer but that looks unlikely as the 28-year-old has scored just once in 26 matches this season.

‘When Ange Postecoglou started the season, he’s got his squad of 25 players,’ ex-Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea star Gallas told Prime Casino. ‘You have to deal with those 25  players, to try to win the Premier League or to try to qualify for the Champions League, Europa League, the Conference League. ‘When you start, everything is fine because all the players are fit, there’s a good atmosphere and nobody is complaining. Slowly, you get some injured players.

‘Players who get injured because they’ve played too many games. Maybe you didn’t manage your squad as well as you should have. ‘Some players don’t perform, you don’t know why. Maybe you have a good result, even if you don’t have all your players. And then, when the number of players out racks up, it’s a crisis; it’s the end of the world. ‘I need players. I need players. For me, it’s very difficult to understand why people buy players during the winter windows. Why? They messed up in the summer, that’s why. How come they messed up in the summer?.

‘Tel from Bayern Munich, he’s a French boy. Why did you sign him?  Don’t you have a winger in your squad? You already have Timo Werner. ‘The problem is, you’ve got a winger already, and you need to bring in another one. Why? Because the winger you already have in your squad, Timo Werner, he is not good enough. ‘Werner didn’t perform when he was at Chelsea. If you know he could not perform at Chelsea in the Premier League, why would you sign him? And now, he doesn’t perform again. It’s poor recruitment, isn’t it?.

‘Why was Ange enjoying his football last year and now he’s finding life very difficult? It’s because he didn’t change his system. When you play, you need to change your system, because all the teams now know how you play.’. Tottenham beat Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United to a January deal for Mathys Tel, with the Bayern Munich loanee scoring his first goal for his new club in Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa.

Injury-hit Spurs have fallen short in a crucial week for the club and manager Postecoglou, crashing out of both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
