SEVERAL police officers have been targeted in a horror terrorist attack which has left one dead in France. The stabbing spree was reportedly carried out by a "known terror suspect" who shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he stormed through a busy market square. The knife attack happened on Saturday at around 4pm in the city of Mulhouse, which sits on the border with Germany.

The suspect is believed to be a 37-year-old Algerian who was listed on the Terrorist Radicalization Prevention Reporting File, according to French media. He allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the horror stabbing spree, reports Le Parisien and Le Figaro.

French President Emmanuel Macron has since told reporters: "It is an Islamist terrorist act - that is beyond doubt.". Macron added specialist prosecutors are now leading investigations over the attack. Nicolas Heitz, the regional prosecutor, said the suspect was arrested just minutes after he started the rampage.

One victim is said to have died after sustaining multiple stab wounds to their neck. A 69-year-old Portuguese man described as an innocent "passer-by" at the market was confirmed as the victim by the anti-terrorism prosecutors office. A second man - believed to be a police officer - is currently in intensive care after suffering injuries to their chest, local media reports.

Another municipal cop and two parking control officers were also left with minor injuries. Horror has seized our city. Terrifying images show a swarm of police at the popular market. Armed soldiers and special forces police secured the square where the attack took place later in the day.

Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz paid tribute to the brave officers and said: "Horror has seized our city.". French prime minister Françoise Bayrou also said on X: "Fanaticism has struck again and we are in mourning. "My thoughts naturally go to the victims and their families, with the firm hope that the wounded will recover.

"Congratulations to the police for their rapid intervention.". An investigating source spoke on the horrors and claimed the man was due to attend a nearby police station before carrying out the attack. They said: "The man was attending a police station to sign his judicial control form connected with his house arrest.

"He refused to do this, and instead attacked a number of people with a knife. Those hurt included at least three municipal police officers.". It follows a series of attacks across Europe in recent weeks. On Friday, a Syrian refugee reportedly attempted to slit the throat of a 30-year-old Spanish tourist from behind in Germany.

The suspect attacked at Berlin's Holocaust Memorial and said he wanted to "kill people out of hatred of Jews", cops have said. Just days earlier, Germany was again rocked by a suspected terror attack when an Afghan asylum seeker ploughed his car into a group of demonstrators in Munich.

A 37-year-old mother and her two-year-old daughter were killed in the attack and injured at least 26 others. Last weekend also saw a 14-year-old boy stabbed to death by a Syrian asylum seeker. Officials say the 23-year-old was motivated by "Islamic terrorism" before his alleged role in the bloodbath attack that left five others injured.
