Liverpool now have ‘more chance’ to win the Premier League after their shock FA Cup exit, according to Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher. The Reds saw their hopes of lifting an unprecedented quadruple ended in brutal style at the weekend by falling to a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Plymouth. Despite that, Arne Slot’s side are still in an excellent position to lift silverware this term. Liverpool sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League ahead of Wednesday’s rearranged Merseyside derby. They are also in the final of the Carabao Cup and have booked an automatic spot in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

And Carragher believes that Liverpool’s clearer calendar boosts their chances of claiming the league title. Speaking on The Overlap, the legendary former defender said: “I actually think [Sunday] was just a great day all round. “Great for the FA Cup with the giantkilling, great for Plymouth, and I think it’s decent for Liverpool. The way I look at it, does that give Liverpool more chance of winning the league, and I think to a percentage it does.

“I think in the FA Cup, definitely the semi-final and the final, you’ve got to move [league games]. Where does it go? Where do they go?”. And while Manchester United icon Scholes agrees with that suggestion, he has issued a warning to Liverpool. He believes that another adverse result against Everton could see their FA Cup exit take on a different complexion. He replied: “I agree with what you say about [Sunday] that it’s probably a good thing [for Liverpool], but then you think about momentum. You lose [to Argyle] and all of a sudden there’s a bit more pressure on you on Wednesday. If you drop points on Wednesday, you’re thinking ‘Oh dear’.

Share your thoughts in the comments below. “That little bit of momentum you had when you’re going into games winning and winning…it does put a bit of pressure on you, but I’d say you’re probably better out of it.”. Should Liverpool beat their fierce rivals Everton on Wednesday, many would feel they have one hand on their 20th top-flight title. A win would see them extend their lead to nine points over Arsenal.

And that advantage could even extend further at the weekend should Mikel Arteta's side lose to struggling Leicester on Sunday and Liverpool beat Wolves the following day.
