Quilted jackets are not to be confused with padded parkas, though there is a grey area between the two, as some quilted jackets can be padded. We live in parka jackets throughout the cold, winter months, but sometimes we want something a little more stylish to take us from work to weekend brunches and shopping sprees with friends, without compromising on warmth.

Barbour made a case for quilted jackets for decades, even centuries.  The revival of the style came in the form of The Frankie Shop’s sell-out Teddy Quilted Coat, which has proved to be a hit with shoppers ever since. While some may have thought the quilted jacket was just a flash in the pan trend, it’s proven otherwise, as it is a staple many rely on years later, and there are no signs of it slowing down.

The style may vary; some feature no collars, others an exaggerated peter pan collar, some designs are copped, others longline, reversible and even flared hem creations. Whether you layer over a chunky turtleneck jumper and UGG Tasman boots, a tracksuit set for the ultimate lounge chic, or with a t-shirt and jeans in the spring months, a quilted coat will be a versatile outerwear staple you can rely on for many seasons.

From M&S and Nobody’s Child to The Frankie Shop, here are our favourite items to shop. The funnel neck, and the zip-up fastening, combined with the thick quilted texture, makes this a quilted jacket best suited for days you need warmth and protection from draughty winds. The hem features a subtle drawstring, which you can cinch in to prevent any breezes, but it also adds a feminine silhouette instead of the traditional boxy fit.

This Reversible Quilted Jacket is cost effective, as you are essentially buying two coats for under £60, which is quite the bargain. Though best suited for the spring and summer months because of the paisley print and cotton fabric, it can be layered underneath a pea or trench coat for extra warmth. Made from soft cotton, with padded quilting, this collarless jacket will elevate any outfit effortlessly.

This stunning multifunctional design has been crafted from 100% organic cotton. It boasts a round neck, long sleeves, and patch pockets. The padded texture in the diamond shape is super flattering. But the best part is it is reversible. Available in three colours, all of which can be worn two ways, and are on sale – we want them all! Available in extra small to large, but the brand has stated it runs big so size down.

Shake up your outerwear wardrobe with this denim quilted jacket. This design is not only a great way to nail the quilted jacket trend, but denim jacket too, which is a style I always gravitate to in the spring and summer season. The dropped shoulders and box fit create a relaxed look. It boasts popper front fastening, as well as a round neckline. Levi has broken the mold with the denim fabric, the floral print, and the curved seams that offer a new spin on the conventional diamond quilted texture.

Damson Madder has a selection of textured garments, and quilted jackets included. There is a wide selection to shop, but the Macy Jacket is my personal favourite. Made from organic cotton with wadding inserted made from recycled polyester. This reversible jacket is quilted on both sides, and features button front fastening. One side is a red and white gingham print, while the other is floral printed, whichever way you wear it you will instantly inject colour and character into your outfit.

Looking for a thicker quilted jacket, this may be the answer as it appears slightly more padded than other designs. Another bonus is it is fitted with an inner cream lining and open ribbed collar to poke out over the round neckline of the khaki outer for extra warmth. It features split cuffs, popper front fastening and square pockets. Yes it is more expensive, but it is premium quality and features additional insulating features.

The Barbour Annanda is a classic design, which is super flattering for the wearer as it boasts a tailored slim fit, whereas other styles offer a boxy fit. This design features a contract cord collar, button front fastening, and patch pockets. If you prefer a longline jacket, Whistles’ creation is the perfect option as it falls midway down the thigh, whereas other designs stop at the hip. Though it is longer in length it features a v-plunge neckline, as well as button front fastening and two patch pockets.

Anthropologie’s Maeve Collared Quilted Jacket is a chic staple to invest in, as it can be worn as outerwear in the warmer weather, or similar to a jumper or thick cardigan in the winter months. The gingham printed design features large lapels with ruffle hem, which squares off into a panel at the back. It also features a slightly different fastening to other brands, which we are on board with. This creation acts in a similar way to a wrap dress – almost – as the fastening is shifted over to one side and features bow tie fastening.

We can’t include a round up of the best quilted jackets without including the staple that revived the trend once more. The collarless design is slightly longline, as it comes just below the hips. It features rectangular piping running vertically down the edges, which helps to create the box-fit at the front, as well as the flared back. The side vents aid this mobility and fluted silhouette. It features contrast green detailing on the shoulders, the fastening and piping on the hem. It also boasts large patch pockets to house your valuables. It is available in green and black colourway. While it doesn’t have stretch, this outerwear staple has been designed to achieve an oversize fit, so some may need to size down.
