A romantic drama that was nominated for four Oscars and lauded as a 'cinematic classic' is set to be broadcast on TV today. Pride and Prejudice, based on a literary novel that The British Museums, Libraries, and Archives Society listed as one of 30 books every adult should read before they die, will be aired on BBC Two today (January 11) at 6:35 pm.
The film, which was first released in 2005, is one of at least 17 adaptations of Jane Austen's 19th-century novel. It features Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the roles of the outspoken Elizabeth Bennett and the charming Mr Darcy. The plot remains faithful to its original source, following Elizabeth as she meets a wealthy bachelor named Mr. Darcy, whom she initially dislikes. However, as she gets to know him better, she begins to like him and they develop a romantic bond.
But, their differing social statuses must be addressed before their relationship can flourish. Directed by Joe Wright, who made his feature film debut with the drama, Pride and Prejudice received widespread critical acclaim upon its release. The movie garnered four Academy Award nominations in the Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score categories, reports the Daily Record.
Although the film is based on a much-loved story, it was released a decade after the BBC's six-episode version, which is often regarded as the best screen adaptation of the Austen novel. Nevertheless, audiences were enthralled by Wright's lush cinematography and the award-worthy performances of its lead actors.
