A family have said they are 'devastated' after an 84-year-old man appeared in court accused of murdering his wife. Police said Margaret Maude Hanson, also 84, was pronounced dead at a property in the Scottish Borders town of Galashiels on Monday December 9. Officers were called to a report of the death of a woman at the address at around 3.05am that day.

Her husband, John Hanson, who is a retired nurse, appeared in private at Selkirk sheriff court last Tuesday charged with her murder. He made no plea and was remanded in custody ahead of a further court appearance. In a statement released through police, her family said: "We are devastated at the loss of our mum and gran. Margaret will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. We would ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.".

Police Scotland Detective Inspector Debbie Duncan said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Margaret who are being supported by specialist officers. We would again ask that their privacy is respected at this time.". A Police Scotland spokesperson added:"We received a report of the death of an 84-year-old woman at a property on Wood Street, Galashiels, around 3.05am on Monday, 9 December, 2024. An 84-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection and is due to appear at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 10 December, 2024.".
